Rounded off a year in which he moved to the World's Number Five by
finishing runner-up to Mike Weir of Canada in the WGC-American Express Championship to secure his first Volvo Order of Merit crown, so
ending Colin Montgomerie's seven-year tenure at the top. Won seven times in total, and equalled the European Tour record of six victories in a
year, with a new record of €3,125,146 (£1,858,602) to his name. In the
process he edged his close friend and stable-mate, Darren Clarke, into second place after a dramatic race which went down to the wire. During
the year Westwood won the Dimension Data Pro-Am tournament in South
Africa before going on to emulate the feats of Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Montgomerie by winning six times in Europe. Had broken through in
America in 1998 by taking the Freeport McDermott Classic. Took up game
aged 13 with a half set bought by grandparents. Maths teacher father, John, took up game at same time to give his son encouragement.
Talented sportsman at school, played rugby, cricket and soccer. Supports Nottingham Forest FC. Married Laurae Coltart, sister of another Ryder
Cup player, Andrew, in January 1999. Has now won on every continent after collecting the Dimension Data Pro-Am (partnering his dad) in South
Africa in January. Returned to South Africa in December and was pipped by Ernie Els in a play-off for the $2 million prize in the Nedbank Golf
Challenge. Top points scorer in the Eurobet Seve Ballesteros Trophy with four wins out of five.

Tiger Woods at the Byron Nelson Classic
World's top-ranked golfer returns to the links after yet another history-making triumph at The Masters; captured his second Masters title
in five years and fourth straight major; held off David Duval and Phil Mickelson in a final-round duel at Augusta and held on for a two-shot win, becoming the first golfer to hold all four PGA Tour majors simultaneously;
after winning nine titles last year, had gone winless in nine straight PGA Tour events, dating to last season, but has emerged victorious in his last three starts; claimed his first title of the year at the
Bay Hill Invitational before making it two in a row at the rain-shortened Players Championship one week later; at age 25, owns 27 PGA Tour titles
and already is the all-time earnings leader on the PGA Tour with over $23.7 million; won the 1997 Byron Nelson Classic and tied for fourth last year.

Info:
Became the first European to win one of the World Golf Championships,
capturing the Andersen Consulting Match Play in February 2000, beating David Duval in the semi-final and Tiger Woods in
the final at La Costa. Had made a slower start to 1999, winning The Compass Group English Open in fine style then in the Smurfit European Open he became the first player on the European Tour to shoot 60 for a
second time. Equalled three records - most birdies (12), consecutive birdies (eight) and the low round on the European Tour (ninth time 60 has
been achieved). Won Benson and Hedges International Open in May 1998 to set up a bold attack on the Volvo Order of Merit title. Almost
succeeded - finishing second after capturing Volvo Masters with closing record-equalling 63. Topped AXA Performance Data Stroke
Averages in 1998. Helped organise special pro-am at Portmarnock in September that year in aid of the victims of the Omagh bombing tragedy.
Always keen on fast cars and is a familiar sight in his gleaming Ferrari with the registration DC 60 - a reference to those low
rounds. Retained The Compass Group English Open in 2000, coming from six shots behind on the last day to beat Michael Campbell and Mark
James - the last person to defend successfully in 1989 and 1990. Led the Volvo Order of Merit race going into the final week at Valderrama but his position of tied 17th in the WGC-American Express Championship
was not sufficient to prevent Lee Westwood claiming the title of Europe's Number One. Won in South Africa for the first time at the start of 2001, capturing the Dimension Data Pro-Am.

Hawaii win propelled him to 27th on 2000 season money list and a berth in
Tour Championship for first time in seven years. Had seven top-10 finishes, including a tie for seventh at British Open.
Had strange 1999 season, making just 14 cuts in 24 starts but finished 73rd on money list.

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Don't expect
Paul Azinger to be content with second place, which is exactly where he sits after two rounds at the Buick Challenge.
Azinger called Friday's 71 "very frustrating" even though his 7-under-par total of 137 left him in a five-way tie for
second, five shots behind the leader, Jeff Maggert. To listen to him you would have thought Azinger had missed the cut.
"I should have birdied 11, should have birdied 13," he said. "Then Maggert was
seven shots ahead at one time, and I looked up and said, 'Well, there goes Tiger. Oops, it's Maggert!' Who knew?"
Joking aside, Azinger's relentless
determination has been a critical component in his return to contention in
2000. With an early-season win at the SONY Open in Hawaii, four top-10 finishes since May and a solid spot in the
top-25 on the money list, Azinger continues to grind -- working to improve some aspect of his game every week he plays.
"My goal this year was to be committed to
winning every tournament; committed to putting forth the effort every week," he said. "My goal has been to be the most
committed guy out here, and by that I mean doing what it takes to be prepared.
I've worked on my short game. I've done the things I needed to do to be prepared every week. It wasn't that way in the past.
There were times when I hit it so bad I had no hope of playing well. But I wanted to be focused and committed every week this year and I've done that."
Azinger will likely make a welcome return to THE TOUR Championship in November, and he can barely contain his
enthusiasm when he talks about playing for U.S. Captain Ken Venturi in the Presidents Cup next month.
"I'm excited about the Presidents Cup because I haven't done it in a while," he said. "I love the format, the competition, the money we give to charity. I'm
motivated. You could see from the makeup of the International team that the U.S. wasn't going to win year after year, but that's the nature of the event."
Asked if he thought the competitive emotions at the Presidents Cup would differ from any of the three Ryder Cups he's played in, Azinger was succinct.
"Once the bell rings, I'm not going to be slapping anybody on the back from the International team," he said simply.
That's just the kind of attitude Venturi is
likely to need and one of the key reasons he selected Azinger as one of his two
captain's choices. In the meantime, though, Azinger has a more immediate
goal in mind -- winning another tournament. Asked how important it would be for him
to earn a 13th PGA TOUR victory before the season ends, the 40-year-old smiled
and said, "It's real important. I'm renegotiating all my contracts this year."
Another joke, another tournament, and other week of total commitment from Azinger
