#1.

The first lick is based on a simple C-major arpeggio. This type of arpeggio is the one I've found easiest to master, so you'll see it in a lot of licks. It's not how many great ideas you have, it's how well you exploit the ones you have...("they don't give these pages to schimps....")

Here's what the arpeggio looks like:

Turning it into a minor arp is easy: lower the third (the second note in the arp) a half-step:

The beauty of arpeggios is the many ways in which you can use them. The C-major arpeggio in this lick doesn't have to be played over a C-major chord. With a little knowledge of music theory, or a good ear, you'll soon realize that you can use them in a lot of ways and get some really nice colorings. If you listen to the midi-file, you'll hear the lick played over an a-minor chord, then over a c-major chord - oh, how cool!! I always play these arpeggios using sweep-picking, ie a single picking motion up or down. If you can play this fast using alternate picking, you are a "chops-monster" and shouldn't be here in the first place...;-).
