Swedish Orchids

In Sweden there are about 40 to 50 species of orchids. Many of them grows only in soil with high lime content. Thus the two swedish islands in the Baltic, Öland and Gotland, are the best places to go if you want to see orchids in Sweden. Other good places are the archepellago of Stockholm and in the moutains in the north.

Here are photos and a short presentation of Swedish orchids I have seen:

Cephalanthera longifolia ( Vit skogslilja, Svärdsyssla ).

Cephalanthera longifolia

This photo was taken in a small grove next to the guesthouse in Björklunda on Gotland where I stayed for a few days during a trip. I was just taking an evening walk, listening to birds singing, and there they where! This orchid likes this kind of places with shade and moist. At some locations there are lots of them growing, making a wonderful sight.
The petals and sepals are all white, while the lip is yellow. It can be 40 to 50 cm high and carries many flowers on the spike. It flowers in June.
The best chance to see them are costal regions in the south and east of sweden, especially on Öland and Gotland.

Dactylorhiza sambucina ( Adam och Eva ).

Dactylorhiza sambuchina

This orchid appears in two different colours: dark red and yellow. The two varieties grow together, seemingly forming a couple. There by the colloquial name 'Adam and Eve'.
It loves open and dry fields near the coast and it also prefer soil with high lime content. Flowering time is early: second half of May.

Dactylorhiza incarnata ( Ängsnycklar ).

Orchis masculata ( Sankt Pers Nycklar ).

Orchis masculata

Orchis ustulata ( Krutbrännare ). Kallas på Gotland för Bysork.

Orchis militaris ( Johannesnycklar, Hjälmnycklar ).
