Commedia dellŽArte had
its era of greatness for about 200 years (from
the middle of the 1600's to the middle of the
1800's) and it was spread all over Europe. There
are a lot of documents, masks, pictures and etc.
preserved from this time. This, and the enormous
interest from academic circles, has given us a
vast number of conceptions, theories and
interpretations about what Commedia dell Arte
was, how it should be played and how it
originated. And while it seems to me that most of
these ideas are very divergent, they are also
mostly very dogmatic.
When Kompani Komedi gives a seminar in Commedia
dellŽArte, it is our interpretation of Commedia
dellŽArte. The lecture discusses:
-
- An introduction to Commedia
dellŽArte, a short survey and an explanation of what
Commedia dellŽArte is.
- The roots of Commedia
dellŽArte and its place in the Italian Renaissance.
We will go through e few different theories about
how Commedia dellŽArte arose and under what conditions
it was played.
-
Commedia dellŽArte and
its style of play. Here is where we discuss purley
practical aspects of Commedia dellŽArte, how it
is played, what is requires of the actor, what a
performance may have looked like, and what it looks
like today.
-
A study of the 14 most
common masks. Origins, characters, carriage, attitude,
costume etc. are discussed. The participants may
also try the masks.
