When buying your first pair of skates, take your time. Research
the different kinds that are available and that suit your needs, and
be sure to shop around.
After the fit of your skates, the wheels are the most important
feature. Consider the wheels carefully. If they feel like rocks, then
they will probably roll like rocks. And if the wheels are that bad on
the skates you are looking to buy, don't! Save some more money and
buy something better.
If at all possible, buy skates from a salesperson that is a skater.
They will be able to answer your questions better than someone who
sells fishing tackle in another department.
Check out bike shops. Sometimes the better skating accessories can be
found there, and you may find a new skate shop in the process.
It is good to know your ski boot size as well as your shoe size. The
reason for this is that many skate manufactures are switching to the
European (ski boot) metric measurement in order to capture part of
the world market.
Find a skate shop with knowledgeable sales personnel. Even if they
charge a little more than someone else, the experience they have will
save you money in the long run.
Beware of giveaway sales. Ask yourself why they have to give away
free pads to get you to buy their skates. Is it that they are just
over stocked or perhaps the skates couldn't sell in the first place
due to a defect or bad design. Be sure of the answer before you
buy.
Bad wheels and bearings can be replaced with good ones, but a bad
fitting skate can only be replace by buying another pair of skates.
Be sure the skates you purchase fit well and feel comfortable.
Before buying skates from a mail order company, check out your size
by going to a skate shop. Also be sure you are getting the best deal.
Sometimes mail order companies cost more than your local skate shop.
Be a smart consumer.
Don't spend a ton of money on skates and get cheap pads. Your
protective equipment is the most important skating accessory you'll
buy, so choose them wisely.
When checking out new skate products, watch out for buzz words like,
speed, super, anatomical, precision, ergonomic, custom, and others.
Learn what these and others words really mean in conjunction with the
product in question. Example from a skate brochure: This skate comes
with a breathable, superflex liner that has an anatomical footbed.
Translation: This skate has a mesh-type liner designed for the human
foot.
If you are buying a new pair of skates and you're still growing, buy
the skates at least one size bigger than your normal size. For a
tighter fit you can insert Dr. Scholl's insoles to your skate boots
to fill the extra space as you grow into them.
You wouldn't buy a good ten speed bike at a toy store, so don't buy
your skates there.
Do invest in quality in-line hockey skates. Do not play in-line
hockey in cheap, old and dusty skates. It's worth the investment to
play in in-line hockey skates that are designed to make you a better
in-line hockey player and be more durable on tough surfaces.
